In a Flash

In a flash, maybe a spark
Dark figures protrude into the night
Under the moon and the dark
The stars and lamps look bright
All the light’s long shadows and blue stars
Grace the eyes of a purpled Face
That covers and covers from breaks to new breaks
Only to have the hands warm to numb
To cry, to yearn with a swollen tongue

But only the moon smiled
The rays licking purpled Face
Grace, dear Grace; His song calls high
As waves of waves flee from the veins
Put the lights back into the shadows
Fill the firmament with stars cruel
Higher than black, farther than faith
There it is frigid, there put the tomb
So his light reflects backward, down to the street
Where the body is broken, yet peacefully sleeps
