Fukushima Seeds

Every seed and leaf I breathe and sneeze
A reminder that inside of me
Lingers traces of devastation of a previous spring
That I’ll succumb to an empty sleep

Beyond these mountains, forests, and lakes
Beyond the rumblings of each earthquake
Springs the cesium and flutters long since escaped
Present as peaches on my hungry plate

Each breath without odour – fresh be the breeze
No warning (Achtung!) be in the leaves
The hidden lives toll for the homes – all history
While brittle our bones – influx with disease

And all we new, wild, and exotic transplants
Cling to our new home since one early August
Embracing a mantra OM’d by inhabitants
“We be the seeds which bring nature back”
